Sofia hopes Ankara will not change its current policy on refugees

Minister Bachvarova

In an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova has confirmed that the number of illegal migrants detained on Bulgarian territory has decreased by 30% compared to last year. In fact, the so-called "Balkan route" is closed and there is now redirecting of a refugee wave to the south. But although currently there are no direct risks, Bulgarian authorities monitor the situation and are ready to change the organization of border security. Sofia has bilateral agreements with Ankara on migration and the minister expects that a possible refusal of Turkey to comply with its joint EU declaration would not affect them, and the new Turkish government would continue the current policy on refugees.
