Black Sea consumes 17-20 decares of Bulgarian coast annually

Abrasion is among the elements of geological danger along the Black Sea coast, Prof. Plamen Ivanov of the Institute of Geology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

The destructive action of sea waves and abrasive processes affect both the coast and the coastal part of the shelf. They occur in nearly 70% of the length of the coastal zone - about 271 kilometers, i.e. more than two thirds of the Black Sea coast.

The Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has been measuring the speed of abrasion at more than 100 sites since 1983 and has estimated that 467,000 tons of land is washed away by the sea each year. This is about 17-20 decares of the Bulgarian seashore each year.

Bulgaria has been trying to counteract the processes through various measures, but insufficient financing remains a major problem.
