In 2017 Bulgaria remained the country with the lowest wages in the EU, data of Eurostat shows. The average wage per hour in the European Union amounted to EUR 23, while in Bulgaria the hourly pay was four times lower- just over EUR 5 per hour. In Bulgaria’s northern neighbor Romania the hourly wages amounted to EUR 5.50. Wages in Bulgaria remain lowest in the whole EU, although a record-high increase of 122% was registered in the past 10 years. In 2007 the hourly pay in this country was at EUR 2.30.
