EC criticizes the state of Bulgaria’s healthcare

Excessive smoking, alcohol consumption and unhealthy nutrition lead to high mortality rates in Bulgaria, a report of the European Commission reads. The insufficiently developed precautionary measures and ambulatory care contribute to the poor health results. There are significant differences in the health status of the Bulgarians by gender, regions and education. The number of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis is worrying. Primary health prevention is poor and leads to high levels of preventable mortality-the fourth biggest in the EU. The Bulgarian health system relies equally on private and budget funding. This raises concerns about the equal access to healthcare, especially for people with lower incomes, the report further reads.
