President Rumen Radev today referred a rejected proposal for a national referendum on adopting the euro to the Constitutional Court. He is seeking a binding interpretation of the Constitution, as well as the annulment of National Assembly Chairwoman Natalia Kiselova’s decision not to submit the proposal for parliamentary consideration. The proposed referendum posed the following question: “Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the single European currency, the euro, in 2026?”
In his statement, the head of state said that this would strike a balance between direct and representative democracy.
On 12 May, the president submitted a proposal for a referendum on Bulgaria adopting the euro. The following day, however, the Speaker of Parliament returned the request, stating that it would not be considered by the National Assembly as it did not comply with constitutional provisions.
