On May 9, 2016 eleven Bulgarian cities join for the first time world movement of the Immortal Regiment. The initiative marks Victory Day through marches carrying the portraits of relatives who have taken part in the anti-fascist struggles. The initiative is a civil movement intended at gathering the portraits and personal stories of people from the anti-fascist resistance, as well as memories of their descendants. The action took place for the first time in 2012 in Tomsk, Russia. Up to date it has been joined by 36 countries. Seventy one doves and white balloons flew over the Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia on occasion of the Victory over Fascism. The eternal fire was lit. Foreign diplomats accredited in Bulgaria, citizens and war veterans bowed before the heroic deed of the fallen soldiers. Today we must remember and never forget the heroism of our grandfathers. We must not allow anyone to use that bitter and sad part of human history for political purposes, Russia’s Ambassador to Sofia Yuriy Isakov said in his speech.
