Unaccompanied child migrants discussed in Sofia

Photo: library

There are 150 unaccompanied child refugees in Bulgaria, though their numbers are constantly changing – this was announced at a public discussion on the problem in Sofia. More than 2,300 unaccompanied children have passed through the country this year and in most cases the option is to offer them a declaration to sign and to put them up in refugee centres. According to National Ombudsman Maya Manolova this practice is on the edge of the law because the law stipulated that children must be put up in places where there are special conditions for minors and in Bulgaria there are no such places. Manolova proposes an amendment to the law that would enable NGOs to appoint representatives for these children.
