Addressing the UN General Assembly’s 71st session in New York, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev stated that “we cannot and should not accept that terrorism and violent extremism is the “new normal” and urged the international community to make collective, global efforts in the management of migration and refugee flows:
“Migration should be managed through collective, global efforts in a responsible way. Our specific focus should be on the protection of human rights of migrants and refugees, especially the most vulnerable – women, children and persons with disabilities. At the same time all migrants have the duty to comply with the laws of the countries of residence. Bulgaria welcomes the emphasis on the global responsibility sharing,” President Plevneliev said.
President Rosen Plevneliev called for active reform to strengthen the UN as it faces a host of crises:
“It is widely recognized that the UN must change and adapt to the new realities. We need an Organization that is properly equipped to meet new challenges and is responsive to ever-growing needs. Strengthening transparency, coherence and cost-efficiency of the UN system is of paramount importance.”
In his address Rosen Plevneliev called for equal opportunities for women in gaining access to senior decision-making positions, including that of Secretary-General of the UN, adding that with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Bulgaria had “a very strong candidate, a true leader with extensive experience in international relations and excellent management skills. A candidate who deserves your trust and support."
