Ahead of the EU summit in Brussels, PM Boyko Borissov said that Bulgaria was ready to support fresh sanctions against Russia over the situation in Syria provided this would result in resumption of negotiations. Shortly before Borissov made this statement, in Sofia the presidential contender of the ruling party Gerb Tsetska Tsacheva called for lifting economic sanctions against Russia imposed over the conflict in Ukraine. On Friday’s eve the participants in the EU summit criticized Russia for its role in the Syria conflict but refrained from imposing further sanctions against it. They discussed issues pertaining to the EU-Canada free trade agreement (CETA).
