Belene reactors not usable anywhere else

Photo: picture library

The two reactors intended for the Belene NPP cannot be used for any other project in either Russia or anyplace worldwide. This is the stance of Atomstroyexport written down in the ruling of the Court of Arbitration in Geneva under which Russia has won a lawsuit against Bulgaria. The only option for the use of the two reactors intended for the Belene N-plant is their mounting at Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP, the stance also specifies. It reads further that the Bulgarian side has done nothing on the issue yet, despite its plans to install a seventh unit at Kozloduy. At the end of October Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova voiced the same thesis – that there was no technical hindrance to install the 100 percent ready reactor at Kozloduy NPP. As to the second reactor, there is no clarity so far about the stage of its manufacturing.
