In its first working day for 2017 the European Commission marked the 10th anniversary of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU. "Bulgaria and Romania that joined the EU 10 years ago, are now vital European democracies. Our congratulations on the anniversary," said a spokesman for the European Commission during the first press conference for 2017. The spokesman pointed out that annual reports on the mechanism for cooperation and verification are expected to be published in late January. Asked if there was news about the Bulgarian candidacy for new commissioner in place of Kristalina Georgieva, it was pointed out that Bulgarian authorities had not yet voiced a candidature for the position.
