In 2016, the number of illegal aliens repatriated from Bulgaria has marked a 77-percent rise in comparison to 2015. In 2017 the number of repatriated foreigners was 1410, while in 2015 they were 797. One of the important tools used for combatting illegal migration is the implementation of return procedures, including involuntary and voluntary. Most of the foreigners returned by the "Migration Directorate" are citizens of Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Syrian citizens usually leave Bulgaria voluntarily and return to a safe third country (mainly Turkey), BGNES reported.
