Number of migrants seeking protection in Bulgaria fall sharply in December

The number of migrants seeking protection in Bulgaria in December 2016 decreased by one-half as compared to the previous month to 815 people, data of the State Agency for Refugees shows. People from seventeen countries, as well as stateless migrants sought protection in that country in the last month of 2016. Over 19,000 migrants sought protection in Bulgaria last year. 764 people received refugee status last year. 587 migrants received humanitarian status last year. Over 1,700 migrants were denied refugee status in 2016, data of the agency further shows. The number of Afghani migrants seeking protection in Bulgaria was highest, followed by nationals from Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Iran.
