Veliko Turnovo is marking the 140th anniversary of its liberation from Ottoman domination with a parade and the re-enactment of the battle for the the konak – the city‘s main administrative building.

Hundreds came out, dressed in historical costumes in a re-enactment of the welconing of General Gurko, who liberated the city on 8 July, 1877.

"The symbol of the takeover of Turnovo is more than the military-strategic task of capturing the passes across the Balkan Range, it is the fact that the medieval capital of Bulgaria has been liberated," says historian Ass. Prof. Milen Mihov.
