MEP Emil Radev: Redistribution of migrant quotas is no panacea

I wouldn't say that redistributing migrant quotas is a panacea that will solve the crisis, on the contrary, control of external borders must be improved, the door through which hundreds of thousands pour into Europe must be stoppered - namely Libya, said for the BNR Horizont channel EPP MEP Emil Radev.

“Right now there is absolutely no control in Libya and hundreds of thousands pass through it on their way to Europe. Traffickers there really feel at home, there are no border or coast guards to stop them and the consequences are to be seen most of all in Italy right now, with thousands coming in every day. The solution does not lie in planning how to distribute them around the other part of Europe, but in how to use all of the EU's resources so as not to allow Italy's shores to be reached by these illegal migrants and not to allow human traffickers to make millions out of illegal trafficking.”

The EU plans to improve the functioning of the Libyan coastguard by allocating almost 46 million euro for building Libya’s coastguard, Radev added.

“Cooperation between the rescue centres of the member countries with countries like Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco will be intensified. A rescue centre will be built in Libya, so that it can handle the rescue operations in its own waters because it is difficult for the naval forces and ships of the EU countries to operate there,” Emil Radev said further.
