Bulgarian government withdraws request for ratification of Istanbul Convention

The Bulgarian government decided to withdraw its request for ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) at the country’s National Assembly. Bulgaria’s Premier Boyko Borissov commented that this issue caused severe reactions by GERB’s coalition partners, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Grand Mufti’s Office instilling huge fears amidst the Bulgarian people. The government was elected by the Bulgarian people and we have to take this into consideration, Premier Borissov said.
