European Parliament calls for Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to Schengen area

The European Parliament has called for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area.

The resolution was approved by an overwhelming majority – 514 “for”, 107 “against” and 38 “abstained”. None of the speakers disputed the fact that the two countries fully meet the criteria for accession to the border-free Schengen area.

The final decision on whether Bulgaria and Romania can become part of the Schengen area has to be made through a unanimous vote in the Council by EU ministers. There are several countries which are still against.
