Nearly 62% of the young Bulgarians aged between 15 and 29, or nearly two-thirds of Bulgaria’s young generation, live in overcrowded housing, data of Eurostat on the living conditions in the EU in 2017 show. An average of 27% of the EU citizens live in overcrowded housing. Only 4% of the young people in Malta and 6% of the Irish people live in such conditions. Romania is last in the ranking. 65% of the young people in Bulgaria’s northern neighbor live in overcrowded housing. The households living in poverty risk are the most affected ones-50%. Overcrowding is highest in the Bulgarian cities-48%. Overcrowding in the rural areas is at 33%. Data of the National Statistical Institute shows another disproportion- there are nearly 3.9 million  homes in Bulgaria, but 3 million Bulgarian households live in 2.7 million homes, i.e. nearly 1.2 million homes remain unoccupied.
