Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, before the European Council meeting in Brussels. After their meeting PM Borissov said that Frans Timmermans had encouraged him, stating that the country should continue its efforts towards meeting the requirements for the terminating the cooperation and verification mechanism.

The two also discussed the enlargement of the Schengen area. Boyko Borissov expressed the hope that the governments of the member countries, negatively inclined towards the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, will provide a reasoned response to the apprehensions of its citizens.

The two also discussed the planned amendments to the Bulgarian anti-corruption law which will allow confiscation of unjustified assets even after the termination of criminal proceedings against their owner.
