A Roma-organized protest took place in front of the Council of Ministers building in Sofia, demanding the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov.

The protest was triggered by a statement by Krasimir Karakachanov, who is also leader of the nationalist party VMRO, after an incident in Voivodinovo village near Plovdiv, when an army man was assaulted, and two brothers, living in the local neighbourhood of illegally built houses, were arrested for the crime.

“Gypsies in Bulgaria have grown exceedingly insolent and the tolerance of Bulgarian society has worn thin,” were Krasimir Karakachanov’s words. Later bulldozers demolished some of the illegally-built homes in the neighborhood, declared hazardous.
