Bulgaria’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office and the State Agency for National Security raided offices in Sofia, Plovdiv, Sliven, Karnobat and Burgas over frauds with EU financing. The competent authorities raided the office of businessman Minuy Staykov in Karnobat as well. Several sacks and bags full with documents were taken out of the office in the presence of potential witnesses. The office traded with farmland. Minuy Staykov was detained on September 5, 2018 on charges of being the leader of a criminal group for tax and excise offences. The Prosecutor’s Office announced that the detainee forced children of his employees to register companies and apply for EU financing under the Young Farmer programme and that over EUR 3.5 million were misappropriated under this EU measure.
