The European Commission will refer Bulgaria to the Court of Justice of the EU over poor air quality, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella announced. The latest Sulphur dioxide data presented show persisting non-compliance with the hourly and/or the daily limit values in the South-East zone, Commissioner Vella pointed out. He specified that these provisions are applicable to Bulgaria as of its accession to the EU since 2007. Today’s decision is the second referral to the EU Court of Justice for Bulgaria’s failure to comply with the EU standards for air quality.
