The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund has selected Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva as Managing Director of the IMF. The mandate is the 12th since the founding of the financial institution back in 1944 and starts officially on October 1st. In a statement Georgieva said that her immediate priority would be to help countries minimize the risk of crises and be prepared to deal with crises. The IMF's long-term goal under her leadership will be to support sound monetary, fiscal and structural policies that are to build stronger economies and improve people's lives. In order to safeguard the Fund's financial strength, the new management would enhance its oversight and capacity development efforts.
