President Rumen Radev withdraws confidence from government

In an address to the nation, the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev officially announced he is withdrawing confidence in the government because it is not acting in the interest of the citizens. Pointing out that for three years he has been urging the government to work responsibly, President Radev stressed that he is not doing this as a political opponent but as head of state with concern for the future of Bulgaria.

We are witnessing a severe crisis in governance at all levels. There is no will for reforms or for fighting corruption. The methodical violation of the law has led to a paralysis of entire social systems and institutions without precedent in the history of Bulgaria’s transition. The people of Pernik and whole villages in the surrounding area have been left without water, and the cabinet is refusing to take the political responsibility for this. Imported waste is being burnt and is poisoning the air but Bulgaria is not a rubbish dump and no one has the right to imperil the health of Bulgarians so that a handful of businessmen may derive a profit under state protection, the President said further.

The cabinet pushed through a reform in the currency board on the quiet. Legislation is falling hostage to lobbying interests while poverty and inequality deepen. Government bodies are not above intimidating dissenters and protesters, we are witnessing an organized onslaught against civil liberties. The government of today is leading to a disintegration of statehood and is depriving us of our future. All this must be put an end to, said President Rumen Radev, and, in conclusion, called for unity in the name of justice, statehood and the well-being of Bulgaria.

The statement of the Bulgarian President is purely political, this country’s Premier Boyko Borissov commented several hours after President Radev announced that he was withdrawing his confidence in the cabinet. “Radev is not a President who unites, because he divides the nation”, Boyko Borissov announced and added that there are no points of intersection between him and the President, apart from the "meaningless consultative councils where nothing is ever solved”.
