The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic, has presented a report on Bulgaria. The document calls for a change in the way minority groups are treated and portrayed in Bulgaria, where "hate speech, discrimination and hostility against Roma, LGBTI people and persons belonging to other minority groups remain an issue of acute concern" , the document reads.
Mijatovic urges the authorities to react vigorously to hate speech, including by high-ranking politicians. The report also highlights the continuous deterioration of media freedom in the country due to the lack of transparency of media ownership and funding, harassment of journalists, the use of defamation lawsuits and political influence.
