With a presidential decree, Vice Admiral Emil Eftimov has been appointed Chief of Defense and promoted to the rank of Admiral. He began his naval career in 1984. He served on all naval positions, commanded a patrol division and was in charge of the Varna-based naval base. Since 2016 he has been Deputy Chief of Defence.
Eftimov inherits the post from General Andrey Botsev, who passed away at the age of 60. Eftimov starts his new post in a difficult staffing situation of the Bulgarian armed forces. The modernization and rearmament process is financially threatened by the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 crisis.
