According to National Statistical Institute data, at the end of 2019 the population of Bulgaria stood at 6,951,482 which is 1.4% of the population of the EU.
Men account for 48.5%, and women for 51.5% of the entire population. Compared to 2018 the population of the country has dropped by 0.7%. The process of ageing continues and at the end of 2019 the number of people aged 65 and over accounted for 21.6% of the country’s population. At the end of 2019 the share of children up to the age of 15 was 14.4%, compared to 2018 this share remains unchanged. The ageing has led to a rise in the average age of the population which, from 40.4 in 2001 has gone up to 43.9 years of age in 2019.
