One of the accused Bulgarian nurses in the HIV trial in Libya, Nasya Nenova, won a lawsuit also in a higher instance court against her torturers. The Sofia Court of Appeals has confirmed that the Libyan General Investigation Department officials must pay her 250,000 euros in compensation. Separately, she needs to be paid more than 13,000 euro, which she did not receive as a nurse for the eight years she spent in prison from 1999 to 2007.

The lawyers of the Libyan side appealed the first-instance verdict on the grounds that the officers were acquitted in Libya. As a result of forced confessions, the Bulgarian medics were sentenced to death, which was later replaced by life imprisonment
