4,627 sparrows were counted in 497 different locations in the country during the 4th edition of the “We are counting sparrows” campaign of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.
Houses with gardens are the places sparrows prefer to nest. They also like spaces between apartment blocks, park trees, quiet streets and meadows with shrubbery. Out of all birds counted the most numerous are house sparrows (3,499), followed by Eurasian tree sparrows (999). Spanish sparrows continue to account for only 3% of all sparrows probably because they are not well known in the country. For this year’s campaign the “veteran” sparrow-counters were joined by 413 new volunteers.
