Lower VAT for baby food, not for alcohol

VAT on baby food and sanitary materials to be 9%, the budget committee at parliament has decided at second reading. Books will also be subject to lower VAT. Chair of the committee, Menda Stoyanova, who is opposed to differentiated VAT, supported the reduction for children's goods. According to her suggestion, excise alcohol, served in restaurants and as part of catering, remains with a tax of 20%.

This has caused anger among hoteliers and restaurateurs, who had a promise from Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to be subject to 9% VAT for their entire turnover. The differentiation will continue until the end of 2021. For the texts to enter into force, they must be approved by the National Assembly.
