The Bulgarian Food Agency has ordered the killing of nearly 250,000 birds due to an outbreak of bird flu on a poultry farm in Bulgaria's town of Assenovgrad. This is the third bird flu outbreak found there over the past year.

The first outbreak in the poultry farm, which is the second largest in Bulgaria, was established on April 5, 2019, and the second on April 8, 2019. At the beginning of June 2020, on the basis of increased mortality, samples of dead birds were taken for laboratory analysis. The result showed the presence of avian influenza, strain H5N8. This has been confirmed by a European reference laboratory in Italy.
Veterinary authorities have then begun work to eradicate the outbreak.
