On July 25 the Orthodox Church marks the Dormition of St. Anne, mother of the Holy Theotokos (Virgin Mary). Bulgarians call this feast the Summer Saint Anna. It is very popular in Western Bulgaria and the Rhodopes where local people believe that today’s feast marks the end of the summer. Saint Anne is considered patron saint of pregnancy and birth. That is why pregnant women go to church on this day. They decorate St. Anne’s icon with flowers and bring shirts, towels, money and socks with them to church. According to folk traditions, women are not allowed to wash clothes, knit or sew on this day.
