The 135th anniversary of the Unification of Bulgaria was marked with a solemn changing of the guard of honour and a modest ceremony in front of the Alexander I Battenberg memorial tomb in Sofia.
Because of Covid-19 there was no officially declared ceremony. Though on a more modest scale over the pandemic, the city of Plovdiv, as always the focus of the celebrations, hosted a special reenactment dedicated to Unification Day.
The culmination of the celebrations in the city was the fireworks display and solemn roll call ceremony in Suedinenie (Unification) square at which President Rumen Radev delivered a speech. The celebrations were attended also by National Assembly President Tsveta Karayancheva, members of parliament, the mayor of Plovdiv municipality Zdravko Dimitrov and other officials.
In Veliko Turnovo the anniversary of the proclamation of the Unification was marked with a military march; flowers and wreathes were laid down at the Mother Bulgaria monument.
In Varna Unification Day was marked with a solemn procession. There too flowers and wreathes were laid down at the monument to the people who laid down their lives in the Serbo-Bulgarian War.
In Bourgas hundreds danced the “Big horo dance of Bourgas” to music performed by Strandzha folk music ensemble.
In Pleven dozens gathered in front of the monument to the Fourth Pleven Infantry Division where the day was marked with military honours and a solemn ritual with the participation of the army.
The anniversary was marked in other regional towns across the country in strict observance of the anti-epidemic measures.
