“Because of the problems we have with rule of law the country could lose European funding,” said European People’s Party MEP Radan Kanev in an interview for bTV.

In his words, European funding could be suspended in cases of abuse of power. Radan Kanev added that on 5 October the European Parliament is to debate the crisis in Bulgaria which is connected with another two discussions – of the EU justice scoreboard and the link between European funds, and corruption and justice.

In the words of Radan Kanev, the almost 80 days of anti-government protests in the country have brought about an evolution of the positions of the European Parliament and the EPP regarding Bulgaria. As to the allegations made by GERB party MPs that the publications about Bulgaria in West European media are financed by Bulgarian citizens, Radan Kanev said this goes to show there is a complete break with reality.
