“2,000 hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients in the country. In Sofia their number is about 700. In the capital city we have 1,200 beds for Covid-19. At this point there is no need to set up field hospitals, when we have 40% occupancy we shall consider other options,” Minister of Health Prof. Kostadin Angelov stated after starting inspections of hospitals in the country, the BTA reports.

Minister Angelov added that you cannot have 1,200 beds sitting idle along with the doctors and the nurses. “But when the need arises we can increase the number of beds by 2,000.”

Dr. Georgi Gelev, director of Sofia’s emergency medical service, who is accompanying the health minister, stated that the healthcare system will withstand the pressure. The question is how much longer doctors can take in the crisis, Dr Gelev commented.
