The Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev pointed to the year 2024 as a realistically possible deadline for Bulgaria's accession to the euro area. He made the statement during a video conference organized by the American Chamber of Commerce.

Bulgaria's banking system entered the Covid-19 crisis much better prepared than many other European systems, Radev said.
The BNB Governor also answered a number of questions related to the direct supervision by Frankfurt of five systemic banks registered in Bulgaria, as well as the fulfillment of the Maastricht criteria. Bulgaria has a good chance to adhere to them until 2024, and the commitments made for the period of stay in the currency mechanism must be fulfilled, Dimitar Radev added.
