The Bulgarian State Railways have welcomed the new year with two new locomotives named after Bulgarian rulers - "Asparuh" and "Tervel". These have been the first new machines for nearly 30 years, BNT reported. They are fully digitalized, with state-of-the-art security systems.
At the moment, they are moving at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, but it is expected to be increased to 160 km/h, which will reduce travel time. The locomotives travel on the lines from Sofia to Varna and to Burgas.
Another 13 machines are expected to arrive in stages after February. All of them will be named after Bulgarian rulers. There will be a QR code on each machine. Upon scanning it with a mobile phone, passengers would learn interesting historical facts related to the ruler.
