On March 23, Bulgaria marks the World Meteorological Day. The first regular meteorological observations on Bulgarian territory began in 1860 when the first meteorological station was built in the yard of the Austrian Consulate in the city of Ruse.
On February 1, 1887, the first permanent weather station made its first measurements in Sofia. It was founded by Marin Bachevarov who was teaching physics at the Male High School Sofia. The weather station functioned until 1992.
