A living wage should be introduced in Bulgaria so as to reduce the number of low-paid workers and working poor, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) proposed during an online discussion of the directive on adequate minimum wages in the European Union.
According to the CITUB, in 2020 the minimum wage was a mere 50% of the living wage. That is why the Confederation is demanding an annual increase of 17.5% of the minimum wage so it may reach the living wage level in 2025.
Outgoing Social Minister Denitsa Sacheva pointed out that the “European Commission’s proposal for a directive by the European Parliament on the introduction of minimum wages in the EU is a good basis for negotiatons” on the subject.
