Bulgarian sheep breeding is in decline

On St. George's Day, which is also the day of the sheep breeders, there should be lamb on the table according to tradition. Agrostatistic data show about 1.3 million sheep are bred in Bulgaria, and their number has drastically decreased in recent years. Experts are not unanimous about the reasons, but according to various data for the last 20 years, the number of sheep in the country has fallen from 11 million to about one million, according to the BNR's "Horizon" program.

Another problem that industry organizations are constantly reporting is "virtual animals". According to the sheep breeders' association, there are nearly two hundred thousand sheep in the veterinary authorities system, but not on farms. This is because subsidies for pastures are absorbed by farms.
