A pan-European study reports that every Bulgarian throws away 94 kilograms of food a year, while in neighboring Greece this amount is twice less. Despite the Bulgarian proverb "No one is greater than bread", Bulgarians throw away big quantities of bread. The biggest food wasters are one-member households, families with small children, residents of large cities and young people up to 25 years of age, Stoilko Apostolov from the Bioselena Foundation has told BNR. He pointed out that the cheaper the product, the less remorse we have to throw it away. For example, we easily part with industrially produced bread, while eager to keep more expensive artisan bread for a week.
Apostolov points out that according to the European strategy "From Farm to Fork", each Member State must find its own mechanism to reduce the pointless waste of natural resources.
