BNT complains over censorship coming from a minister

Photo: library

In recent days the Bulgarian National Television - BNT has been subjected to an unprecedented attack by the executive power. The Minister of Culture in the caretaker cabinet has accused the journalists of BNT of violating the law, of a possible crime and of endangering the national security, a position of the Management Board of the public television reads.

"In an official letter from the ministry, an explanation has been requested from the television about its editorial activity. Never before, in Bulgaria’s new democratic history, has a minister dared to censor the decisions of journalists who are legally independent and autonomous. That is why we will refer the case to international institutions, the diplomatic corps and non-governmental organizations in defense of media freedom," the position reads.
