Bulgaria holds penultimate position in EU in terms of innovation

Bulgaria remains among the EU countries identified as "emerging innovators". Such countries have minimal progress, according to the EU's annual report European Innovation Scoreboard 2021. Bulgaria is second to last ahead of Romania.

Bulgaria receives excellent and very good marks in terms of environment-related technologies, design applications and trademark applications The country performs well in the implementation of broadband internet and in the employment of IT specialists.
Based on indicators such as public investment and government support for research and development, venture capital spending, product innovation and business innovation, the lag is significant. Also, Bulgaria has an above average share of Non-innovators without disposition to innovate, the report reads.
