The use of natural gas must be an “intermediary step” towards the creation of a carbon neutral economy, something that is especially true of Bulgaria, European Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans said in answer to a question from the BNR’s Horizont channel, put during the Euranet Plus Summit 2021:

“In Bulgaria, but also in other countries, the transition away from coal and wood to renewable energy is one step too far, so we have to take an intermediary step in bringing natural gas into people’s homes (…) It is a fundamental transition (…) We have to make sure that this transition is just, if it is not just, if it is not based on solidarity it will just not happen. We all have an interest in making sure that there is no energy poverty, that the transition helps people to pay less for energy not more, and that it is done in a fair way,” Frans Timmermans said.
