Svishtov marked the 144th anniversary of its liberation with three days of various initiatives, including cultural events. The culmination of the celebrations was a military ritual held at the Pametnitsite (monuments) locality.
A concert will be held tonight called “The heroes of Svishtov – in the past and now”, after which the town’s mayor Gencho Genchev will bestow “For merit” honorary distinctions.
During the Russo-Turkish War (1876 -1878), after the Russian army landed on the Bulgarian bank of the Danube on the night of 26 June, 1877, Svishtov became the first town in the country to be liberated.
