The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved the name "Varna" for an asteroid with number 510466, said Assoc. Prof. Veselka Radeva from the Marine Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium of the Maritime School in Bulgaria's coastal city Varna. It orbits the Sun for 2 years and 9 months in an almost circular orbit. It is located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The asteroid Varna was discovered in astronomical images taken on November 24, 2011 with the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope, which is located in the Haleakala Observatory of Hawaii, by Assoc. Prof. Radeva and Ani Fukita from the Fourth Language School in Varna.

The discovery is part of the research work of student teams led by Assoc. Prof. Radeva under the International Asteroid Tracking and Search Programme.
