On August 5, a day of mourning was declared in the municipalities of Petrich, Sandanski and Kresna in memory of the two foresters who lost their lives combating a fire near the village of Petrovo.

Following the escalation of fires in the country, the government ordered stopping of all activities related to cleaning agricultural land. The army also takes part in combating fires across the country. The most important thing is to protect people’s lives, caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev said.

Satellite forecasts show that central and southwestern regions of Bulgaria will remain at extreme risk of fires until August 15. The rest of the country is in the lower orange danger zone, Chief Commissioner Nikolay Nikolov said .

Bulgarian firefighters with 5 machines have been involved in extinguishing fires near the town of Pehchevo in North Macedonia since August 4.
