The traditional Karakachan Festival will be held between August 20 and 22 in Karandila locality near the town of Sliven (Southeastern Bulgaria). Last year’s edition of the festival was cancelled because of the coronavirus epidemic.
Until the mid-20th century, the Karakachan people were semi-nomadic shepherds grazing their sheep on natural pastures. The organizers of the festival promise a rich cultural programme with the participation of Bulgarian and Greek dance formations, a scientific conference on the preservation of Karakachan traditions, etc. Currently, nearly 20,000 ethnic Karakachans live in Bulgaria. The biggest Karakachan community lives in the municipalities of Sliven and Karlovo.
