The levels of ammonium nitrogen in the region of Vera Su, the ship which ran aground near Kamen Bryag almost one month ago, are three times higher than the levels that have so far been gauged by the coastguard station, the Ministry of Environment and Water has announced.
The seawater has changed colour and there is a strong smell of petroleum products in the area. After the border police were alerted to a slick next to the stranded ship yesterday, a team from the ministry conducted an on-site inspection. Two samples of seawater have been taken – one from the coast and the other from the water next to the ship’s bow. The Executive Agency “Maritime Administration” and the regional coordination headquarters were notified of the results immediately.
Later, Captain Valentin Enchev from the “Maritime Administration” declared there was no pollution around the Vera Su at the moment, and that the oil spill spotted yesterday is gone.
