In 2020 birth rate drops by 4%: National Demographic Strategy report

Aging of the population is the leading demographic tendency for Bulgaria. A positive tendency is the drop in child mortality, the 2020 National Demographic Strategy report indicates.  

59,440 children were born in 2020, 4% down on 2019. 301 children up to the age of 1 died. The child mortality ratio is 5 per mille, compared to 5.6 per mille in 2019, and 14.4 per mille in 2005.  

The average age of women on giving birth to their first child is 27.5. 60% of births are out-of-wedlock. The number of women of childbearing age is 1.45 million, dropping by 13,000. The number of marriages is 22,000, fewer by 7,000 compared to 2019. The number of divorces is 9,000, down by 1,900.
